Some women and sex instead of love

Dear Bunmi,
I started an affair with a married man who used to be my next-door neighbour. He moved away shortly after he got married, so I don’t really know his wife. We meet up about twice a week and the sex is mind-blowing.

I’m completely in love with him but he tells me he’ll never leave his wife and their two young children. The thing is, he’s always happy to see me whenever we meet and buys me lovely presents. The looks he gives tell me he has feelings for me. Do you think he loves me without realizing it yet?

APC National Women leader tasks women

The National Women Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Hajiya Ramatu Aliyu, has called on Nigerian women to see Nigeria’s 55th Independence anniversary as a period to embrace the attitude of positive change being promoted by the Federal Government.

Aliyu in a statement, she  noted that this year’s Independence anniversary is remarkable given the import of President Muhammadu Buhari’s victory at the last presidential election in the polity.
The statement read: ‘’At 55, Nigeria is a successful nation because of the hard work, creativity and enterprise of our women, who participated in every battle for change by lending their voices.

“Women have a divine sense of intuition, the sixth sense. They are the true strength of our democratic change from hopelessness to hopefulness. Today, as we move from  dashed hope into the realm of great expectation under APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, it must be emphasized that the work of nation building is for all and not for Mr. President and his cabinet alone.”

Woman Who Posted a Snapchat of Boyfriend Pointing Gun at Her Was Found Shot Dead Hours Later

One Little Rock, Arkansas woman posted snapchats of her boyfriend pointing a gun at her hours before she was found dead with a gunshot wound.

Stephanie Hernandez, 21, mother of two, posted snaps of herself and her boyfriend, Rafael Gonzalez, at the new house they were in the midst of moving into on Sunday. She snapped a photo of a gun and ammo in addition to a photo of Gonzalez pointing the gun at the back of her head with a “strap chat?” caption and another one where he points the gun at the camera.
Just a few hours later Hernandez was found dead with a gunshot wound, her house “ransacked” with the floor covered in blood, according to police.

Old softie and footy legend Phil Cleary still the hard man in defence of women

“I long for the day when the murder of 60 women a year by intimate partners, estranged or current, produces the same sorrow and outrage from a prime minister and his opposition counterpart as does the killing of a child — and inspires a condolence motion in Parliament of the kind moved for the victims in the Martin Place siege. For that day will truly mark the beginning of the end for the wife killers and bashers.”

PHIL Cleary is a football legend. He played for Coburg in the VFL.
He made his name in the 1970s and 80s. This was a decade when VFL was notoriously tough. There was no such thing as a match review panel.
Back in the day, the VFL was not about developing AFL players. It was all about suburban pride and physical confrontations.
Phil played 205 games, he wore a Ned Kelly beard and he was a nuggety individualist.
Towards the end of his career, he was captain-coach of Coburg. Then as a stand-alone coach he took Coburg to back-to-back premierships in 1988-89.
When he retired from football he stood for Federal Parliament as an independent. He won the seat of Wills and his journey continued in Canberra.
Today Cleary is a tireless worker in the campaign to bring an end to violence against women.

Last week he gained a prominent ally.

ATLANTA (AP) — In a last ditch effort to keep their client alive, lawyers for the only woman on Georgia's death row have filed a flurry of appeals with high courts of both the United States and the state of Georgia.
Kelly Renee Gissendaner, who was scheduled to die by injection of pentobarbital Tuesday evening at the state prison in Jackson, was convicted of murder in the February 1997 slaying of her husband. She conspired with her lover, who stabbed Douglas Gissendaner to death.

Gissendaner would be the first woman executed in the state in 70 years.

Taliban Torched Women-run Media in Kunduz

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) on Tuesday condemned the Taliban’s torching of a women-run radio and TV station in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz shortly after overrunning it.

Taliban forces seized Kunduz on Monday in a surprise move that marked the first time the insurgent group captured a major city since being ousted from power in 2001.
In a statement, the French-based media advocacy group said Taliban forces occupied government buildings and the offices of local media organizations in Kunduz, including independent local broadcaster Roshani Radio and TV, torching and destroying much of the equipment.

China angered by Hillary Clinton tweet on women's rights

From calling her a "big mouth" to making Monica Lewinsky jokes, China has reacted furiously at US presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's recent comments about China's record on women's rights.
Mrs Clinton said in a tweet on Sunday that Chinese President Xi Jinping was "shameless" for hosting a United Nations conference on women's rights that day.
Mr Xi has come under fire for hosting the summit as several women's rights activists were held earlier this year for planning a demonstration against sexual harassment on public transport.
Rights groups say several female human rights activists remain in detention.
Mrs Clinton has made women's rights a signature part of her campaign.
Chinese state media have taken care to cultivate an affable and lovable image of President Xi Jinping. Calling someone "shameless" is also a particularly bad insult in Chinese culture, which abhors "losing face".

Involve Afghan women in crucial talks with the Taliban, urges HRW

NEW DELHI (Thomson Reuters Foundation)  Afghanistan must ensure women have a say in negotiations between the government and the Taliban and other insurgent groups, Human Rights Watch said on Monday, warning that gains made on women's rights could slide if they are not given a seat at the table.

Fledging peace talks between insurgents and the Afghan government have been on hold following news leaked in July that the Taliban's reclusive founder, Mullah Omar, had been dead for more than two years.
The New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) said this was an opportunity for authorities in Kabul to honour commitments made to include women in the process when the peace talks resumed.
"Afghan President Ashraf Ghani promised to include women in negotiations with the Taliban at the 'right time,'" Sarah Taylor, HRW's women, peace, and security campaigner said in a statement.
"But for full and meaningful participation, every stage of the process is the 'right time' to involve women."

China hits back at Hillary Clinton in women's rights row

US presidential hopeful called President Xi ‘shameless’ for promoting women’s rights at UN while persecuting activists at home

China has hit back at US presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton after she called President Xi Jinping “shameless” for hosting a meeting on women’s rights at the UN while continuing to persecute activists at home.
A strongly worded editorial in the fiercely nationalistic, state-run newspaper Global Times likened Clinton to Donald Trump, a “demagogue” whose popularity is based on his “big mouth”.

the hidden suffering of millions of women revealed

Endometriosis:
Often dismissed as ‘women’s troubles’, endometriosis affects one woman in 10 of reproductive age, yet a lack of research and funding means sufferers can live in severe pain, unable to work or socialise
The hidden toll and extraordinary neglect of a disease that affects an estimated 176 million women around the globe, causing many to suffer a life of pain and debilitation and sometimes infertility, is revealed by the Guardian.
One woman in 10 of reproductive age has endometriosis, it is estimated, and yet often their primary care doctors do not know what it is and the specialists to whom they are sent are ill-informed.
Vast numbers of women are under-treated or badly treated. It can take years to get a diagnosis and during that time women may suffer severe pain and are unable to work, socialise or maintain a sexual relationship.
The disease does not always have symptoms and may be the cause of half of all unexplained infertility.
Endometriosis has existed in the twilight for centuries because of society’s reluctance to discuss what was euphemistically known for so long as “women’s troubles”.

"Isn't it a disgrace for humanity that we still need to underline this," Xinhua quoted Merkel as saying at the UN event, which opened on Sunday.

Gene Test Finds Which Breast Cancer Patients Can Skip Chemo

·         Many women with early-stage breast cancer can skip chemotherapy without hurting their odds of beating the disease — good news from a major study that shows the value of a gene-activity test to gauge each patient's risk.
·         The test accurately identified a group of women whose cancers are so likely to respond to hormone-blocking drugs that adding chemo would do little if any good while exposing them to side effects and other health risks. In the study, women who skipped chemo based on the test had less than a 1 percent chance of cancer recurring far away, such as the liver or lungs, within the next five years.
·         "You can't do better than that," said the study leader, Dr. Joseph Sparano of Montefiore Medical Center in New York.
·         An independent expert, Dr. Clifford Hudis of New York's Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, agreed.

Amanda Williams, the public relations chair and historian of the National Association of Colored Women’s Club, said the karaoke night gives students a fun break from school and gives them an opportunity to be themselves.
“All EIU students (are invited) to come out and just participate and sing with the songs we grew up with,” Williams said.
Maya Pitts, the president of the organization, said the planning for karaoke night took the organization on a trip down memory lane.
“The Women Improving Lives chapter karaoke event is to bring together and unite the campus with music from our era with fun,” Pitts said.

Cop peels 5-foot python off woman’s arm

By Associated Press

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. — A southwest Missouri police officer is been called a hero for calmly peeling a 5-foot python off a woman’s arm after the snake sank its teeth into her arm and began to squeeze tightly.
The Springfield News-Leader reports Mount Vernon Police Cpl. Shaun Cobb went to the home of Leadeana Oetker on Friday after she told a 911 operator the python had latched onto her arm.
Oetker says the snake grabbed her when she reached into the 20-year-old reptile’s cage. Her stepson called 911 when her hand and arm started turning purple.
Cobb used the dull edge of a butter knife to force the snake’s jaw apart so he could detach it from her arm.
Oetker says she’ll let her boyfriend feed the snake from now on.

Business leaders pledge investments worth millions to boost gender equality - UN

Top global companies and foundations, including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Unilever, are committing millions of dollars to promote gender equality as they gather at a United Nations event in New York.

Commitments made at the Business and Philanthropy Leaders Forum, hosted by the UN entity dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women (UN Women), seek to close the deep financing gaps that hinder progress for women and girls.

Achieving gender equality is one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that comprise the 2030 Agenda, which world leaders adopted on Friday. According to UN Women, gender equality is crucial to realizing the transformative promise of the new global development agenda.

this woman 'died' 13 times - then miraculously came back to life

28-year-old Rebecca Morris-Roberts suffers an extremely rare condition which stops her heart and breathing until she is technically dead. But seconds later, her body manages to 'jump-start' itself, bringing Rebecca back to life.
She has suffered reflex anoxic seizures - thought to affect only four people in the UK - since she was a teenager. And they are usually brought on by a bout of nerves.
“My eyes roll up into my head, my lips and face turn grey, my body stiffens, I stop breathing and begin to convulse,” she said.
“When I go through it I’m out for the count and I don’t know anything about it until I come around. My body somehow ‘defibs’ itself. It’s such an unusual condition and I have no idea what causes it. I do something even superheroes can’t do – I regenerate!”

So when she decided to tie the knot with long-term boyfriend Elfyn Morris-Roberts in April 2014, her family feared she might “die” walking down the aisle.

After much deliberation Rebecca, decided to have a pacemaker fitted just three months before the big day.

“I didn’t initially want to have it. From the age of 16 to 21, I was told by various doctors that I was making it up and being a drama queen,” said Rebecca, who is originally from Wrexham.

Harriet Harman: Labour is failing women UK

The former deputy leader threw down the gauntlet to Mr Corbyn, saying he had to 'sort it out so that we have women’s leadership at the top of the party'
Jeremy Corbyn’s credentials as a leader with only a limited commitment to equality was put firmly back in the spotlight after Harriet Harman issued a public warning that Labour women are not content with a “clean sweep of men” holding the top jobs.
In a hard-hitting speech at Labour’s women’s conference, the curtain raiser to the party’s annual gathering, the former deputy leader threw down the gauntlet to Mr Corbyn, saying he had to “sort it out so that we have women’s leadership at the top of the party”.

Tracing the story of Tyrone famine victim Jane Cook

Lyn McLeavy has spent almost her entire life tracing the story of her great, great grandmother Jane Cook, an Irish Famine victim from County Tyrone.

She was shipped to a notorious Australian jail as she tried to keep her starving family alive.
The search began as a child for the historian from Melbourne, who would ask her father: "Daddy, where did I come from?"
Ms McLeavy is visiting Newry, County Down, as Northern Ireland commemorates the Irish Famine for the first time.
Mother-of-two, Jane Cook, was 26 years old when she was jailed for 10 years in Van Diemen's Land (now known as Tasmania).

How 23-yr-old model born without legs makes N220, 000 daily

Most women regard their legs as part of their sex appeal. But not Kanya Sesser, the stunning 23-year-old lingerie model. Kanya was born without legs, abandoned at 1 week old, and brought up in a foster home, but even all that has not held her back.

It has not enough to take the edge off her ambition for success because Kanya now makes an average of N220,000 (US$1000) per day as an underwear model.

Kanya is breaking down the barriers of the modelling world by showing that just because she is different, that doesn’t mean she isn’t sexy.
She defies traditional beauty standards by working as a model, and hopes to prove that “different” is sexy.
No medical explanation is given for Kanya’s condition, but she is believed to suffer from an extremely rare disease condition described as “Amelia”  that presents as complete absence of an arm or leg in as a result of the limb formation process being either prevented or interrupted very early during development as a foetus in the womb.
It is believed that the Amelia syndrome appears to have a recessive pattern of inheritance—that is, the parents of the affected person each carry one copy of the mutated gene, but do not show signs and symptoms of the condition.
In a few cases, amelia may be attributed to health complications

Administration officials are aiming for a 25 percent infection reduction in females between ages 15-24 by the end of next year and a 40 percent reduction by the end of 2017.
"No greater action is needed right now than empowering adolescent girls and young women to defeat HIV/AIDS," National Security Adviser Susan Rice said.

Blocked fallopian tubes, major cause of infertility in women – Expert

Dr Kola Kayode, a gynaecologist with a private hospital in Abuja, says that blockage of fallopian tubes is the major cause of infertility in women.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Saturday in Abuja that blockage of fallopian tubes occurred when there was an obstruction that prevented egg from travelling down the tube.
He said that fallopian tubes could be blocked either on one or both sides of tubes, known as tubal infertility, insisting that it was one of the causes of infertility in 40 per cent of women.
According to him, blocked fallopian tubes increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy — a pregnancy that occurs outside the uterine cavity and usually in the fallopian tube.

Lack of rural schools divides families as mums, kids seek city education

WOMEN are having to abandon their husbands in rural communities so their kids can get an education.

With about a quarter of the state lacking access to a government high school, rural families who can’t afford boarding school are being forced to separate to keep the family’s business or properties running while mum and the kids move to the city.
Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association boarding schools head Jacqui Beale said more families were having to confront the possibility of separation.

All-Women Bangladeshi Peacekeeping Unit Defies Stereotypes

The UN is working to deploy more women peacekeepers to conflict zones.

The United Nations’ peacekeepers are tasked with bringing order and stability to conflict and natural-disasters zones. But the organization’s 100,000-plus force of peacekeepers has been criticized for lacking women on the force. There have also been reports of male peacekeepers engaging in sex exploitation.
The good news is that women from Bangladesh have responded to the UN’s call for more women to serve as peacekeepers, forming an all-women unit that was deployed to Haiti following the earthquake in 2010. They are one of just three all-women peacekeeping units in the world today.
The unit’s unlikely formation is documented in a new film titled “A Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers” that premiered this month at the Toronto International Film Festival.
