Social Media Dominates Women's Use of the Web

Poor women in cities are using the internet just as much as more affluent women and men, but are less likely to use it to increase their income or engage with politics online, a study has found.
The report launched today says that poor urban women are held back by a lack of education and language skills when they use the web. The study found that 97 per cent of women who use the internet do so through social media, especially Facebook. But, for example, just 20 per cent said they had used the internet to access information on sexual health and contraception.

Do Women Need Female Viagra? Sexual Dysfunction May Be Due To Lack Of Communication With Partner

Female Viagra is here. In August, the Food and Drug Administration approved Addyi for premenopausal women experiencing hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or low sexual desire. While the disorder, which can also be marked by pain, is something several women experience — it may not need a prescription, according to a new study published in Fertility and Sterility.

Researchers from MedUni Vienna in Austria recruited 30 pre- and post-menopausal women with sexual dysfunction and split them into two groups: One group was given a hormone treatment with oxytocin, while the other was given a placebo in the form of a nasal spray; both groups were advised to use treatments within 50 minutes before having sex for over a period of eight weeks. After a "washout" period of two weeks, researchers then switched treatments among groups for another eight weeks.

For each round of treatment, women were asked to keep a diary with their partner and assess how sexual function did or did not

5 Reasons Some Nigerian Women Choose To Be Single

Editor’s note: Inspired by the Linda Ikeji N500 million mansion debate, Naij.com’s head of entertainment, Onyinye Muomah, analyses reasons why an “African woman” raised to view marriage as a priority might choose to be single as well as a go-getter.

Blogger Linda Ikeji’s amazing feat – buying a N500 million mansion in an exclusive area of Lagos while still single – has been a subject for debate on the social media. The 35-year-old has been criticised for making herself “unmarriageable” by flaunting her wealth. I doubt the same would be or has ever been said of a man.

Men 'feel threatened by intelligent women'

Despite claiming to find intelligent women attractive, men choose not to date someone who is smarter than themselves, according to new research

The next time a man tells you that he's attracted to intelligent women, you might want to ask him whether he's ever actually dated one.
No, that's not a slight on the female of the species. Instead, it's the findings of a new study, which suggests that men state their theoretical preference for intelligent women only to then change their minds in the cold light of the dating arena.
The study, which will be published in the November edition of ‘Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin’ but is already available to read online, concluded that rather than find smarter women attractive, men are actively intimidated by the prospect of an intelligent partner.
Psychologists at the University of Buffalo, California Lutheran University and University of Texas, Austin, broke their research into two parts. First, 105 men were asked to rank the merits of women who had out- or under-performed them in an intelligence test as a prospective romantic partner.
They found that the men were more likely to declare their attraction to women who had performed better than them. "Men formed favorable impressions and showed greater interest in women who displayed more (versus less) intelligence than themselves," the study authors wrote.

Mobile, internet use among Kenyan women very low, study shows

A new study reveals that digital literacy and mobile phone use is still very low among Kenyan women.
The findings of the study on women’s empowerment in information communication and technology in Kenya attribute this to the cost of accessing the Internet and web-enabled gadgets, lack of training and general illiteracy among women and girls.
The study was conducted by the International Association of Women in Radio & Television (IAWRT), a global organisation of professional women working in electronic and allied to the media.

Heart disease gene 'found in women'

Scientists have identified a gene that puts women at higher risk of heart disease, an early study suggests.

The work showed that women who had a particular version of the BCAR1 gene were more likely than other women to have heart attacks and strokes.
In contrast, men who had the gene were not at increased risk.
Researchers say this adds to mounting evidence that there are differences in how men and women experience heart disease.

Thicker arteries

In the study, published in the journal, Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, researchers from University College London pooled data from five European research projects, involving nearly 4,000 men and women.

Women making the news

Toyin Saraki
While the men in power play their politics, all appears to be well between their women. Wife of Senate president and a woman with a heart for charity, Toyin Saraki, has been circulating via social media her acivities in the recent 70th UN General Assembly, particularly in instances where she represented the First Lady.
I’m humbly honored to have represented the wife of the President of Nigeria, Her Excellency Mrs Aisha Buhari at the Organisation of African First Ladies against HIV/AIDS (OAFLA) United Nations General Assembly Side-Event Meeting.
According to Mrs. Buhari,This year’s theme – Building on MDGs to invest in the post-2015 development agenda – is one that is close to my beloved country, Nigeria’s heart.
The progress made on the MDGs across the world, including in Nigeria – and indeed in a number of sub-Saharan African nations – has been truly outstanding. Just fifteen years after, MDG 4 to reduce child mortality came into effect in some countries; the global child mortality rate has fallen by an outstanding 53%; whilst child mortality has fallen by 48% in the African region.
She also quotes Professor Babatunde Osotimehin, who while giving his address at the meeting stated,
I have three grand-daughters, so the matters of women and girls are close to my heart.

Diezani Alison-Madueke
FORMER Nigerian minister for Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, has trended for ten straight weeks before and after her arrest in London.
At one time, she denied seeking asylum in any part of the world, stating that the Jonathan administration had done a lot in the Oil and Gas industry that cannot be rubbished by malicious claims. But her arrest has changed that music considerably, so much so that the United Kingdom-based Chevening Scholarship, has removed her name from its list of female achievers.
Chevening, an international scholarship scheme which enables students with leadership qualities from 144 countries and territories to undertake postgraduate study or courses in universities in the UK, had given Madueke its scholarship in 2002, which enabled her to attend the Cambridge University for her MBA and on her return to Nigeria, became the first female Executive Director of Shell Petroleum Development Company.
Her emergence as the first female to hold the position of the Minister of Petroleum Resources and the first female President of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), prompted Chevening to list her as one of its best female alumni in commemoration of the March 8 International Women’s Day.
But following her recent troubles and the invitation by UK’s National Crime Agency on allegations of money laundering and corruption offences, Chevening has delisted her name from its website.
Commentators are generally of  the opinion that it says a lot about “all these international honours”.

Seyi Shay
Another female musical bright light making waves is Seyi Shay, who rocked the blogosphere earlier in the year when she was pictured sitting next to former president Goodluck Jonathan at an election campaign event in the hottest dress of the year.
This month Seyi Shay signed a contract renewal deal with Etisalat’s music platform “Cloud 9” keeping her as a brand ambassador of this music platform alongside Olamide and Ice Prince. The deal was announced on Cloud 9’s instagram page this week. Details still under wraps, apparently.

Linda-Ikeji
The undisputed queen  of the Nigerian blogosphere and latest neighbour of Mike Adenuga had stunned the space by sharing photos of her newly-acquired palace in Banana Island, releasing a statement generally prompting girls to work hard.
While her fans are cooing on her behalf, there are also a million and one skeptics that question the source of this “sudden” wealth and linking it to the 2015 presidential elections campaigns.
The photos are stunning, all agree.

Cameroon girls take over Calabar sex market

Calabar, Cross River State capital, is famous as the home of bevy and succulent women. Their welcoming disposition gives the city a warm and alluring ambience to many a visitor to the city.

The bulk of these women are girls from tertiary educational institutions in the city. Teenage secondary school girls along with their city colleagues who are also attractive make the population of women in the city burst at the seam. To keep body and soul together, many of them resort to “hustling”, a nomenclature for part-time prostitution prevalent in the city.
These ‘hustlers’ operate from their hostels and homes during nocturnal hours. They roam the streets, especially around places with active night life like Atekong Drive, Marian Road, Effanga Mkpa Street, Edabor Street,Third Avenue, Second Avenue and highbrow eateries where people, particularly visitors, congregate at night and can afford to pick them up for a fee to satisfy their sexual appetite.

'We can't go back' say women activists on Taliban Kunduz 'hit list'

While the Taliban’s brief rule of Kunduz is over, their invasion may have dismantled the city’s women’s rights network

Within hours of capturing the city in northern Afghanistan, the Taliban recruited young children, asking them to point out the houses of government employees, NGO workers and especially women's rights activists.
“The Taliban had a hit list of female activists,” said Ms Rustami, head of the Kunduz Women and Youth for Peace NGO, a women’s rights organisation, which included her name alongside “almost every active working woman in Kunduz.”
Four armed men later arrived at Ms Rustami’s home, their faces covered and eyes lined in kohl, and demanded her father hand her over.

The Playboy problem: has the brand ever endangered women?

An ex-bunny describes the loss of her ‘family’ as the magazine stops publishing nude photos – but Gloria Steinem is among its detractors, saying the publication has never expressed ‘the full humanity of men or women’

Jaki Nett, a 72-year-old yoga instructor and former Playboy bunny, is worried.
“Do you know if the magazine will survive?” she asks, on the phone from Germany.
Nett is reacting to this week’s announcement that Playboy, a magazine first published over 60 years ago featuring a nude Marilyn Monroe, has decided to no longer feature photos of naked models in its pages.
Time has marched on, but the move to take nude photos out of its pages seems so antithetical to what the magazine has stood for and symbolized for six decades, it does not seem like an overreaction to question the magazine’s destiny.

Data shows that progress has been made in recent years, but there is still a long way to go to close the gender gap.
The call for equality was made at the 2015 Borlaug Dialogue in the US.
"Certainly, we are not on track at the moment to feed the population we expect to have around the world in 2050," Ms Clinton, vice-president of the Clinton Foundation, told the gathering.
