Threat to Buhari: Avengers get stern warning from Nigerians
The crisis in the Niger Delta region appears to be escalating following threats by militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) to kill President Muhammadu Buhari if he visits Ogoni land ahead of the president’s scheduled visit to Rivers state to flag off the UNEP clean-up of Ogoniland on Thursday, 2nd June, 2016.
In the assassination threat which was made in a recording sent to IBTimes UK, a man is heard saying during a phone conversation with one of the hosts of the UK-based Radio Biafra that Buhari would be signing his death warrant by visiting the delta. The representative of the group issuing the threat said Buhari should sign his death warrant before coming to Port Harcourt or try to visit any state of the Niger Delta community, Biafra land, adding that if the president tries to step his foot in any community of the Niger Delta, in Biafraland, he will not go back alive.
The group also said that any Niger Deltan who will try to walk with Buhari will also go to his grave that day. This latest threat by the group is coming in the wake of a resolve by militants to continue relentless attacks on oil and gas installations in the Niger Delta region despite the federal government’s deployment of fighter jets and the military in Delta state. The group carried out its threats by bombing two oil wells belonging to Chevron oil on June 1. According to the group, the Chevron oil wells affected are RMP 24 and RMP 23, described as Chevron’s highest producing wells. However, a sections of Nigerian particularly from the north have expressed outrage over the threats by the militants to assassinate the president, warning that ant attempt to do that will spell doom for the Niger delta.
Others on the other hand urged the militants to employ other avenues of making their agitation known.
