Hurts at Least Three People Sunday afternoon blast at Shanghai Pudong International Airport occurred at a passenger check-in area
SHANGHAI—A minor blast at Shanghai’s primary international airport on Sunday afternoon left at least three people hurt, according to local reports that suggested it was caused by firecrackers or homemade explosives.
The blast at Shanghai Pudong International Airport shortly after 2.30 p.m. local time injured three and appears to have been the result of “homemade explosives,” according to a brief statement from the Shanghai Airport Authority. It said the explosion occurred at a passenger check-in area of the airport’s Terminal 2 building and that police are investigating.
The incident comes at the start of a week expected to draw global media attention to Shanghai as Walt Disney Co. officially opens a theme park in the city, its first in mainland China.
Some state media, including a brief online report from People’s Daily, cited fireworks as a likely cause.
An unverified video shared on social media showed what appeared to be a parcel or suitcase exploding with small reddish blasts close to check-in counters. The explosion created panic but didn’t injure most of the people near it.
Another video showed a light plume of smoke wafting toward the terminal’s high ceiling, and a photo showed medical authorities rushing a person with a white bandage on their neck on a stretcher through the terminal.
The blast comes days before the scheduled opening of Shanghai Disneyland, which is located a few kilometers from the airport.
Other international events are currently under way in town, including a major financial conference, Lujiazui Forum, and an annual film festival that has drawn Hollywood stars including Ian McKellen.
The airport authority statement said there was no impact on flights. The area where the blast occurred houses the check-in area for several Asian and European carriers.
