The Women Arise for Change Initiative (WA) on Friday condemned the ‘gruesome murder and beheading’ of a woman in Kano state, North- West Nigeria.
The woman identified as Bridget Patience was reportedly beheaded by some youths alleged to be Muslim worshipers in a Kano market on Thursday over blasphemy.
The victim, who was said to be of Igbo descent, was accused of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad during a religious argument at Wambai market.
According to reports, the woman, who sells plastics at the local market was in the company of her husband when she was murdered.
‘We received this news of this barbaric act with utmost shock and disbelief. We are particularly saddened that an innocent woman could be so murdered in broad daylight over such a flimsy allegation of blasphemy which was even unproven while She was murdered in cold blood,’’ President of the group, Joe Okei-Odumakin said in a statement.
‘‘It is worrisome that after almost 24hours that this heinous crime has been perpetrated, there has been no categorical statement from the government or Kano State or any local authority as we even understand that none of the perpetrators have been arrested.’’
She added, ‘‘There is no Justification whatsoever for anyone to take law into his hands or take the life of another.’’
‘‘ We wish to state that actions like this and the unwarranted silence by the authorities are capable of promoting anarchy within the society and must therefore be curtailed immediately through government decisive response.’’
Okei-Odumakin said, ‘While condoling the family of the late Bridget, we demand unequivocally that the government must immediately bring all the perpetrators of this dastardly act to justice without any delay.’’
She urged government to arrest and prosecute the killers without further delay.
