Woman whose fingerprints were found at Ypsilanti homicide scene to face competency exam

Haleigh Maynard appeared in the 14th District Court Sept. 10 before Judge J. Cedric Simpson, who scheduled a competency examination for Nov. 19.
Maynard will undergo evaluations for both competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility, records show.
A transcription of a swear-to hearing recently obtained by The Ann Arbor News reveals investigators found Maynard's fingerprints at the crime scene.

"The investigation sparked ... lengthy scene-processing, during which a lot of evidence was gathered by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab," Ypsilanti police Detective Robert Peto told a magistrate while swearing to the arrest warrant prior to Maynard's arraignment last month. "During the course of the investigation and ... upon receiving some of the results from analysis of the items that were taken, it was found that some latent prints on the scene ... as Haleigh Elizabeth Maynard."
She was taken into custody for the fatal stabbing after being arrested on an outstanding warrant in Canton Township, according to records.
"Miss Maynard had, under Miranda, given a confession to the homicide of Gary Schneider," Peto told the magistrate. "...She provided details that would have been known only to the investigators."
Investigators still aren't releasing exactly what those details are or what brought the 23-year-old woman and 71-year-old man together at his house at 407 Charles St. in Ypsilanti on March 26.
Schneider was found dead on the floor of his home with multiple stab wounds in his neck and head area, police said.
The discovery was made after an area woman found his wallet on the sidewalk nearby and attempted to return it.
Police have said the elderly man and young woman were in a verbal argument that turned violent.
Maynard remains in custody at the Forensic Center in York Township where she will undergo the evaluations.
